If I Decide to Mediate, Do I Still Need a Lawyer?

Usually, yes. It is very important for you to know about your legal rights, interests and obligations. You need to know how the law affects you. As a mediator, I cannot provide any legal advice nor can I act as your lawyer in any way. I encourage each spouse to (a) consult a lawyer before mediation commences, (b) consult a lawyer throughout the mediation process and (c) obtain independent legal advice before signing any agreement reached in mediation.

I always recommend that all parties seek independent legal advice, for two reasons: 1. I cannot provide you with any legal advice. 2. Your lawyer can explain in more detail the application of the law to your circumstances. It is always helpful to know the law and your rights, interests and obligations before mediation starts.
