What Types of Issues Can We Mediate?

You can mediate any issue. However, many mediations, including Marc-Nicholas Quinn, will not mediate abuse and violence.

For instance, family mediation can address:

  1. Identifying the issues needing resolution;
  2. Suggesting various ways in which resolution of those issues can be achieved;
  3. Discussing and resolving of all issues arising on marriage breakdown;
  4. Discussing and resolving of all issues arising on relationship/cohabitation breakdown;
  5. Addressing all issues relating to the children such as custody and access or time with or parenting responsibilities and enjoyment of your children;
  6. Solving property issues such as ownership of assets, division of assets, possession of assets, disposition of assets and transfer of assets;
  7. Solving financial issues such as spousal support, child support, special and extraordinary expenses relating to children;
  8. Negotiating and preparing of a comprehensive separation agreement or a partial separation agreement;
  9. If you are not married but are considering marriage, mediation can assist with negotiating a cohabitation agreement or a marriage contract which would address financial issues while living together, on death and on separation;
  10. Conflicts between child and parent or grandparent and grandchildren and parents;
  11. Resolution of business disputes between family members;
  12. How and when to separate;
  13. Resolving parenting issues (including custody and access);
  14. Agreeing on the details of the parenting arrangements for their children;
  15. Payment of interest on the property settlement if there has been a delay in making the settlement;
  16. The disposition of the matrimonial home and other real property;
  17. Special treatment of employment pensions (CPP need not be dealt with as the Plan has its own rules for sharing of pension credits by separated spouses);
  18. The division of household furnishings;
  19. The payment of debts; and
  20. The provision of security such as life insurance in case one of the spouses dies while still having continuing financial obligations as well as the maintenance or purchase of health/dental/drug/hospital insurance plans.
